US EPA-approved methods for isocyanates
A variety of methods are used by the isocyanates industry to sample/analyze emissions. For example, EPA-approved methods commonly used for measuring isocyanates emissions from stacks include, but are not limited to, the following Conditional Test Method (CTM) protocols:
- Screening Method for Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate (MDI) CTM-031. This method used to sample MDI vapor/aerosol at the stack is less costly than other methods but tends to overestimate emissions. However, if the sampling results are below a targeted/regulatory limit, more rigorous sampling is not needed.
- Method for Sampling Isocyanate Stack Emissions CTM-036 and Method for Analyzing Isocyanate Stack Emissions CTM-036A. These methods can be used to sample/analyze various isocyanates at the stack, including MDI, TDI, HDI, HDI Biuret, HDI Trimer and IPDI.
